At Warm Heart, repairs usually go on a list until materials and the right skills are available. Sometimes, a repair moves straight to the top.
Last week, the ceiling in the girls’ bathroom block fell down. Thankfully, no one was underneath. The roof remains on our list of projects awaiting funding, but the ceiling needed immediate attention. With Social Services also due for its annual inspection, Songa picked up ceiling sheets in Phrao, and his team completed the repair in a day.
Over the past couple of months, we have also taken care of several smaller jobs that help keep the campus safe and tidy. New fencing around the kitchen’s rubbish and recycling bins keeps visiting stray dogs away. We fenced off the old well as a precaution, even though the children have generally ignored it. We also replaced the eroded base beneath the boys’ rainwater catchment tank.
Another improvement makes the campus easier to navigate. Over the years, river rock and gravel have helped smooth our pathways and driveways, but these surfaces are difficult for wheelchair users. A new pathway now connects the roadway with the restrooms and one of our meeting rooms, giving visitors using a wheelchair or walker a more accessible route.
We did well overall in the Social Services inspection, with some further work needed in the kitchen. We have made improvements over time, most recently installing an industrial hood above the cooking area. Next are shelves to keep bags of pumpkins and potatoes off the floor, enclosed cabinets for dishes, and screening around the dining area to keep mosquitoes out. Our traditional open-air farm kitchen needs a few adjustments!
Thank you for being Everyday Heroes for Warm Heart. Finding funds for these repairs and improvements is rarely easy, and we are grateful for your help in making our home safer and more welcoming for everyone who lives, works, and visits here.
With gratitude and good wishes for the holiday season ahead,
Dana, Michael, Evelind, and the Warm Heart Family
P.S. GlobalGiving's annual "Giving Tuesday" is December 1.
We will also be launching our own Matching Funds Campaign running through the end of the year. Stay tuned!
