The rainy season arrived earlier than expected this year, bringing strong winds that toppled several trees and bamboo groves across the Warm Heart campus. During one storm, a large tree fell onto the roof of the older girls' dormitory.
Fortunately, the dorm's steel roof frame and thick adobe walls absorbed the impact. While several roofing tiles were broken and the roof leaked badly, the building remained structurally sound and no one was injured. Our maintenance team cleared the fallen tree, repaired the damaged roof, inspected the electrical system, and had the dorm ready for the girls to return the following day.
This is exactly why the Everyday Heroes fund matters. It allows us to respond immediately when unexpected repairs arise, keeping our children safe without delaying other essential programs.
We also completed another project from our Wish List this quarter by installing curtain dividers in the library. The simple partitions have created a quieter reading and study area for the children. They also proved useful during a strategic planning retreat led by Jeremie and Sally Bourgois of the Lovah Project, allowing staff teams to break into smaller working groups as they developed plans for the coming year.
Another important improvement is underway. Our heavy-duty water filtration system, which provides safe drinking and washing water for the campus, has reached the end of its service life. Thanks to your support, we raised the $2,900 needed to replace it and have reserved a new unit with our supplier. Installation will begin as soon as the equipment arrives.
One by one, we're checking items off the Everyday Heroes Wish List. Next on the list is a covered parking area to protect our vehicles from the increasingly unpredictable weather and help reduce long-term maintenance costs.
Thank you to everyone who stepped in this quarter as an Everyday Hero. Your support keeps the lights on, the water flowing, the buildings safe, and allows us to respond quickly when the unexpected happens. These practical improvements may not always be visible, but they make everything else we do possible.
On July 15, GlobalGiving's Bonus Day gives us another chance to make a difference. Our goal is to raise the funds needed for the steel roof structure for the Green Café, the first building at our new Regenerative Agriculture Learning Center. A stronger steel roof will safely support the solar panels we hope to install in the future, making the building more resilient and sustainable for years to come.
