Look at Irene! Thanks to you she has not missed a single day of her 1st term in secondary school for 4 months! As she excitedly prepares to tackle 2nd term she had a special message for you.
January 23rd is the day I reported to school accompanied by my aging grandfather. Unfortunately for me I did not get a chance to carry my suitcase to the dormitory like the other girls. We did not last 5 mins at the school accountant’s office, without 1/3rd of the school fees there was no possible way I was getting admitted that day. I remember at that point feeling like the world had stopped on me! I turned to look at my grandpa and the look of hopelessness was resigned all over his face,at that point I just knew I was done. All the hard work, the late nights was for nothing. I remember just sitting there thinking what was the point? Success, education, good career is meant for a select few. So, we gathered my boxes and everything else I’d come with and we were out of the school gate waiting for the next minibus to take us home.
In 3 days, my grandpa received a call from my former headteacher, a woman so passionate about girls and education, she was more of a mentor than a teacher to me. To cut the long story short in a week on February 2nd I was back in the minibus, this time with a cheque of my complete remaining school fees from Mfariji Africa. My first term just ended and i received a follow up call from Mfariji. I know you don’t know me, I know you might never even meet me but I wanted to say this to you. The donation you gave to Mfariji Africa paid my school fees, it gave me hope that someone I don’t know, i may never meet cares. And because of that, I promise I will do my best, I will work hard, I will put in extra time because you my friend just made me understand that success is not for a select few. Because you believed in the work that Mfariji Africa does in our community a girl like me gets an opportunity to influence the world positively tomorrow.
I want you to know my friend my life is forever changed!
Thank you ~ Irene.
