Beauty & Brains is a scholarship fund for bright but underpriviledged girls in Kenya. The scholarship was founded on ensuring every girl in our program understands she is beautiful, she is enough, she is important. It all begins with education.
While primary education is free for girls in Kenya, this does not apply to high school education. Most girls who successfully finish primary education end up getting married, getting teen pregnancies while trying to raise school fees the only way they know and finally completely drop out of school due to lack of school fees. Our goal is to provide sustainable support to enable these girls complete secondary school and beyond becoming productive members of the society.
While basic education begins to unlock potential, it is secondary education that provides the wings that allow girls to fly. Secondary education helps turn brave, bright girls like into confident and strong leaders who can change their community and country. The scholarships fund will allow girls and young women to empower themselves through education and create real change in their lives and communities.
Girls who are educated earn higher salaries -- 10 to 20 percent more for each additional year of secondary school -- and sending more girls to school and into the workforce can boost an entire country's GDP. Educated girls also marry later, have lower rates of infant and maternal mortality, and are more likely to immunize their children and less likely to contract malaria and HIV.
