People who have been forced to flee their homes and live in refugee camps on the Greek island of Lesvos face daunting challenges during the summer months. With temperatures frequently surpassing 30C and soaring up to 40C, residents struggle to stay cool and maintain dignified living conditions.With high temperatures, a lack of natural shading within the camp and inadequate ventilation of the shelters, coping with the heat becomes a challenge, leaving the residents exposed to the elements.
With your support, we aim to distribute essential cooling items throughout the camp, including fans, cooler boxes, mosquito nets, insect repellent, and insulated bottle cases. The heat also strains the resources and capabilities of our dedicated community volunteers who work tirelessly under the blazing Greek sun. By providing summer kits containing essentials like hats, sunglasses, cool bottles, and sunscreen, your support can make all the difference!
In the long run, the biggest challenge of the weather is the lack of suitable infrastructure to deal with weather extremes. The proper functioning and maintenance of sanitation facilities, such as thetoilets, become increasingly challenging. High temperatures often result in poorly maintained and filthly toilets amplifying hygiene and safety risks for residents.
