HHWT’s New Nickname Escuela de Artes Industriales

Have Hammer Will Travel A.C. is our legal name and will never change, however our name not easily translated in Spanish. Students and the community are unable to recognize it easily and see it as unacceptable.

The Board of Directors of HHWT realized that this is a moment in time for more recognizable nickname which is needed for a variety of reasons. A new nickname is required for our future vision as we grow and society changes. Changing our nickname (wordmark) to Escuela de Artes Industriales is a huge decision for HHWT. Getting it right can secure the long-term future of HHWT and boost awareness, reputation, and income. Getting it wrong can be an expensive disaster and too often the decision is made without the proper care or research. HHWT has done our due diligence and research. HHWT is looking to update the new nickname word marked legally. Our research shows we are the only school using that work mark.

In the beginning of HHWT we did splendid work traveling with woodworking tools to local orphanages. HHWT now has a physical location that woodworking and industrial arts classes are taught. Does our current name (or brand name) do our magnificent work justice? Do people understand the kind of work that HHWT does because of the name? Or are they distracted or confused by it? The single most important objective of any name or brand is that they do justice. It waves the flag for all the work of staff and volunteers and all those changed lives of students. According to branding specialists that HHWT spoke with names fall into three categories: the abstract, the implicit and the explicit. Many charities continue to favor explicit names that explain what they do or the cause area in which they work. It was suggested HHWT do the same with our new wordmark (nickname to be explicit).  That will take about six months to promote, use, and get Escuela de Artes Industriales well known.

Per websters dictionary, Explicit means stated clearly and in detail, leaving no room for confusion or doubt.

 In 2021 HHWT Board of Directors created a 5-year capital campaign of purchasing the building that we rent and improving our campus. The new nickname Escuela de Artes Industriales will help our school achieve our future capital campaign goals.

In 2021 we created an all-female woodworking class. Let us face it: in this culture, it’s much more likely for men to be comfortable with tools and carpentry than women. But given the chance to learn, women can be just as proficient as men when it comes to manifesting their own creative building ideas.  Women need a different space. Since bodies are different, and backgrounds and learning styles are likely different, HHWT created need a female-oriented space, just for women! 

This class is intended to respond to that need. It will get women (and other femme-identifying people) up-to-speed on basic carpentry skills, including working with wood, planning, and designing simple projects as well as using hand and power tools safely and effectively.
