ABS-CBN Foundation-Bantay Kalikasan piloted a Citizen Science Program in Lobo, Batangas, a town in the Verde Island Passage, which is recognized as the global center of marine biodiversity and was declared a Mission Blue Hope Spot in 2023. This citizen science initiative began with coral reef monitoring in 2020. The program connected community volunteers and LGU staff with biodiversity experts to collect data on the health of the reefs and, consequently, better manage marine protected areas.
Despite its rich biodiversity, the Philippines faces a slew of environmental challenges: passive plastic pollution, deforestation, rising sea levels, and overfishing, among others. This, coupled with the lack of scientists and community participation puts the country at risk, thus highlighting the need for inclusive and long-term solutions.
Bantay Kalikasan's Citizen Science Project connects network of scientists to its partner communities. Scientists train the communities in species identification and tracking, how to use tools and devices, as well as data management, with the belief that with the right knowledge and tools, they can positively impact their environment through regular ecosystem surveys. Through livelihood incentives, we hope to sustain the participation of these communities in environmental stewardship.
With your help, we can provide more communities with access to Citizen Science training, resources, and opportunities. Help us expand our scope under Citizen Science: from reefs, mangroves, and seagrass beds to hopefully cover forests, rivers, and more. ABS-CBN Foundation International is an accredited non-profit organization with a 501(c)(3) status.
