The Basketball Scholarship Program is designed to support young athletes who develop exceptional basketball skills as well as leadership qualities with the opportunity to receive bursaries/scholarships awarded to TBA Basketball scholars program so they can pursue their education in secondary and at tertiary level. The purpose of the basketball scholarship program is to nurture and support young athletes access quality education using basketball as a tool to pursue academic and athletic dreams.
Access to school and completion of secondary school is unequal in Uganda. Many children are unable attend school and access quality formal education or are forced to drop out due to the financial burden. The cost to access good quality formal education is too high and most families in rural areas cannot afford paying tuition and families in settlements can not afford to support children to study outside the settlement. Sports talent development is never pursued as a means to transform lives.
Tooro Basketball Academy has partnered with education institutions within and outside the Rwenzori region. Through these partnerships, TBA has secured full or half scholarships which can be awarded to selected young athletes through the basketball scholars' program. This program aims at providing scholarships to 30 student athletes per year. TBA will enhance its basketball training program and support more young people to access opportunities and also promote social mobility through education
The Basketball scholars' program will provide underserved young people new educational opportunities and experiences, foster social mobility and inclusion for athletes in rural area and in settlements. These young athletes have a chance at scholarships/bursaries and integration into good schools, internships and basketball camps. These students athletes in turn, move on to become role models in their communities and inspire other young people.
