The whole Zambia, the town of Siavonga and the Community School Katulumba are experiencing a situation very similar to the one in many countries: preoccupation and sense of uncertainty.

Altough the numbers of Covid-19 in Zambia are lower than in many countries, the situation is very delicate. In order to prevent as much as possible the spread of the virus, a lockdown is present since mid march. Schools are closed, and in the summer they resumed only for 7th graders, who need to write their exams before year's end.
The country is not prepared to face a pandemic in the magnitude that hit developed countries: it would be a tragedy.

The good news is that the 7th graders (and the teachers) have at disposal the two new toilets, of which you can read the details in the previous report: two flush toilets, with a septic tank are ready to be used. A very convenient timing, in a circumstance where hygiene is more important than ever.

Regarding the next steps of the project, after the immense progresses made before the summer, we are now in the process of collecting enough money to start with the first (of two) sanitary block (8 flush toilets plus 7 basins).
This future works require more funds than the previous ones, and the construction will start as soon as there are enough funds to build the fundations for the toilets' block.
Due to the emergency of Covid-19, in the last months many donations were given to Covid-19 related projects; now, that in many countries the emergency is fortunately over, we start to see donations flowing again on this project: thanks!
We really hope that, in the next report, we can share with you the beginning of the 1st toilets' block construction!

To resume quickly the situation of the Katulumba school: until one year ago, before this fundraising campaign started, 600 children and 9 teachers shared 3 classrooms and 8 latrines - the same facilities built to accomodate 84 children more than 10 years ago. In this last year, thanks to the generosity of our donors, the 4th classroom was finished and two (flush) toilets (and their septic tank) were constructed and are now ready to be used - one for the boys, one for the girls! They can now be used by the 7th graders back to school and, when the school will finally resume for all the pupils, will be used by the children with sensitive issues such as girls on their period or those with fragile health.

With your continuous support we will reach our final goal - building another 16 toilets and 3 additional classrooms.

Education is a privilege and every effort needs to be spent to ensure the right and opportunity is offered to every human being. We are building the future of the Katulumba School children, one step at a time.

Thank you for building with us a better future!

It is with great joy we are writing this report as immense progress has been made. Although the schools are closed in Zambia due to the Coronavirus, the construction works continues.

As you may remember, Katulumba school, in spite of the devotion of the teachers, struggled to function smoothly, as it lacked the space to accommodate the growing number of children and did not offer basic sanitary facilities such as toilets: 600 children shared 3 classrooms and 8 latrines.

However in the last few months a lot has changed, thanks to the generosity of you, our donors. In the last report we showed you the septic tank (to serve the first two toilets) under construction. Now the septic tank is finished and the two newly constructed (flush) toilets are ready to be used - one for the boys, one for the girls.
Waiting for more funds to accumulate to build 2 toilet blocks (8 toilets for girls, 8 for boys), these first two toilets will be used by the children with sensitive issues such as girls on their period or those with fragile health.

Another great news: the 4th class room is also finished and ready to be used! Once the situation with the Coronavirus outbreak subdues and the schools can open again, the students will find a much more suitable environment to learn.

With your continuous support we have come closer to our goal: building another 16 toilets and 3 additional classrooms.

Education is a privilege and every effort needs to be spent to ensure the right and opportunity is offered to every human being. We are building the future one child at a time.

Thank you for building with us a better future!

Dear friends of the Katulumba Community School at the Fishing Camp in Siavonga, Zambia!
First of all, happy new year!

As you know from the project and our previous reports, the Katulumba school in Siavonga lacks the minimal standard for teaching: three classrooms and eight latrins for more than 500 children. Our - PTA of Katulumba School, the Fishing Camp community, the Education Office of Siavonga and the Guardavanti's team - plan is to build toilets to minimize the epidemic risk, and to enlarge the school to properly accomodate all the pupils.

As you may remember, in October the first 2 toilets (one for boys, and one for girls), were being built, lacking the septic tank. This latter was almost finished just before Christmas; the photos show the works at the end of Novemeber. There were some delays due to the excavation works, as the contractor started some weeks later than expected. Once the excavation was done, builder and the community did the building works. The bricks are made on site by the community, as it is cheaper  than buying them:  thanks to your donations, a mould, cement and sand has been bought, and  the community, eager to contribute with their work to the project, moulds the needed bricks.

After Christmas a new tranche of collected donations has been sent to the school, so that the first toilets can be finished, as well as the 4th classroom: the works to finish it will start as soon as the toilets will be ready.

With your continuous and generous support we will be able to build all the needed 16 toilets, and the 4 additional classrooms.

Please continue to follow us, to support and share the project among your friends.

Sincerly

The Katulumba school in Siavonga lacks the minimal standard for teaching: three classrooms and eight latrins for more than 500 children. Despite the dedication of the teachers and the efforts of the parents, the education doesn't reach a decent standard and the lack of basic hygiene put the children’s health at risk every day.

Thanks to your generosity, this summer we could built 2 toilets (one for boys, and one for girls), as you can see on the pictures. In the next few weeks they will start digging for the septic tank, and sanitary wares will also be installed. By the next report the pupils and teachers of the school will be able to use the new toilets!
The decision to build toilets instead of latrins (as in the project), was taken together with the PTA (Parent Teacher Association) and the Education Office (local branch of the Ministry of Education), upon this latter's suggestion. In fact, as the school has a borehole and a 5000Lt tank, having flush toilets reduces drastically the risk of epidemies and diseases.

And this is just the beginning, we are planning to build 16 more toilets, 4 new classrooms and new staff houses!

Please continue to follow us, to support and share the project among your friends.

Together, we can change the life of the Katulumba pupils and teachers.

Thanks!

Big changes begin with small steps!

The Katulumba school in Siavonga lacks the facilities to teaching its students according to basic education standards: three classrooms for more than 500 children, divided on 3 shifts/day; moreover, children’s health is every day at risk: the ratio latrines/students is 1/60 (ideal ratio is 1/15).

The project is ambitious, though it is possible to start with the first, little step: on Global Giving, thanks to all of our generous donors, we have already collected 600€. We run few other fundraising activities, and with some Guardavanti funds we are proud to share with you the good news: today we transfered the money to the school, to build the first additional double latrine!

We know we still have a long way to collect the remaining amount, to build all the necessary facilities: new clsassroms and all the necessary additional latrins, to assure the children of the Katulumba School the basic education and the minimum sanitary standards they deserve.

We will build the needed premises step by step. As soon as we have enough to start with a construction. Along with the next report, we will send you the photos of the new latrin, while it will be builded and when it will be finished.

Licia, Guardavanti's responsible for this project, is going to visit the Fishing Camp and the school next month, for an update of the school needs. She will share any news and new photos upon her return.

We really appreciate any further aid to continue this project: education is the pre-requisite for a better living, for escaping from poverty.

Thanks to all of you who contributed to this first step! Please continue to follow us and to support the children of Fishing Camp!
