Back to school

This new year, after all the difficulties that emerged from the pandemic, and the schools that had a series of lock-downs, begins with a sign of hope for Zambian children: the reopening of schools seems there to stay!

During the crisis, in emerging countries it has not always been possible to implement distance learning, and this has posed a serious threat to children's education.

Guardavanti is very happy at the idea of the Katulumba Community School filled with joy and the desire to learn new things. At the same time, we are very aware that the urgent need for new classes and sanitary facilities has never diminished.

Thanks to our donors, we have made progress with the fundraising, but we are also conscious that this is a long-term project, that the funds needed to start with one block of toilets are still to be reached and that our commitment to raise funds must never decline.

This summer, me and Licia, the project manager, will go to Siavonga to visit the school. We are looking forward to meet our dear partners in order to work together and be aware of all the needs of the students.

We are confident to come back with good news!

Please continue to follow us, to support and share the project among your friends.

Sincerely,
Marco

The pandemic Covid 19 is, unfortunately, far to approach an end. Every time when things are going better, a new wave with new variants trows us back into limitations and fears.

Many developing and underdeveloped countries, like Zambia, have a very low vaccination rate: in Zambia, in particular it is stuck to 5,5% (population completely vaccinated). This implies great preoccupations for the local population (due to fragiles health care systems) and a worldwide danger for the development of new and unknown variants.

In this situation, having schools with proper sanitation and enough space to sit the kids, is crucial. For the Katulumba School, at the Fishing Camp in Siavonga, is still a dream. The fundraising for this project is ongoing, and it is ambitious: we still need more than 15000$, to be able to build one of the 3 important blocks that will make of Katulumba School a decent place to learn: 1) the block with 3 classrooms, to bring the total of classrooms to 7 (one for each school year); 2) the sanitary block for girls (8 toilets and 7 sinks); 3) a similar sanitary block for boys.

We know that is a long way to go, but we believe that, step by step, with the help of many generous donors, we'll reach the goal: building the first sanitary block. This will add up to the 4th classroom and the firts 2 toilets we were already able to build thanks to our donors.

We hope that the current 608 pupils, learning in 4 classroms (3 shifts/day), and having at dispostal 2 toilets and 8 latrines, will have soon new facilities.

We look forward to share with you good news in the next report, hoping to have enough money to start with the next phase of the project. Continue to follow us!

The last year and a half we all suffered major changes in our lives; the pandemic stroke developed and undeveloped countries alike. Many countries, like Zambia, have underdeveloped health care systems, and there the prevention and measures to limit the spread of Covid-19 are, if possible, even more important than in the developed countries.
Zambia went through several pandemic waves, the last one this summer: in June, once again, the schools were closed to help stopping the increasing daily cases.
The Covid-19 vaccinations are pacing quickly in most of the developed countries, while in the whole Africa less than 2% of the population has been fully vaccinated.

In this situation, having schools with proper sanitation and enough space to sit the kids, is crucial. For the Katulumba School, at the Fishing Camp in Siavonga, is still a dream.
When we started this project, we could, quite quickly thanks to many generous donors, finish a 4th classroom and the firts 2 toilets. Then, the pandemic started, and comprehensibly, the funds to be raised for this project  started to slow down, as many went for the sanitary emergency.

As per today, from the beginning of the fundraising, we raised around 5285$, of which 4400$ were spent to build the classroom, the 2 toilets, the septic tank. We have now available around 900$. We need to raise another 16000$, to be able to build one of the 3 important blocks that will make of Katulumba School a decent place to learn: 1) the block with 3 classrooms, to bring the total of classrooms to 7 (one for each school year); 2) the sanitary block for girls (8 toilets and 7 sinks); 3) a similar sanitary block for boys.

The school population, since the start of the project, has grown to 608 pupils. Currently, they are learning in 4 classroms on 3 shifts/day, and have at dispostal 2 toilets and 8 latrines.

We look forward to share with you good news in the next report, hoping to have enough money to start with the next phase of the project. Continue to follow us!

As the pandemic eases all over the world, and students globally return to school, it is important to remember the inequalities still faced by those who began less fortunate. Access to hygiene facilities is paramount to reducing the spread of the virus. Unfortunately due to the overpopulated nature of the school, social distancing can be very difficult.  Thanks to the help of our amazing donors we have already made fantastic headway on this project. Providing an additional classroom and 2 toilet blocks.

We hope to provide proper facilities to cater for the number of students within the school to ensure every child has access to quality and safe education. Already, our fantastic donors have raised almost $5000 towards the next phase of the project, however, we cannot start building until we have enough to see at least one structure completed. The final build will see a further 3 classrooms and 2 sanitary blocks containing 8 flush toilets and 7 basins each.

Education should not be a privilege, and every effort needs to be spent to ensure that the right to education is assured to every single child. We are building the future of the Katulumba School children, one step at a time.

With your continued support, we know we will be able to reach this goal. Thank you for building with us a better future!

After being in lockdown for several months, classes resumed at Katulumba school. It has been an exceedingly difficult year so far, with pupils unable to go to school for long months, and with no possibility to learn from home through e-learning, as was done in developed countries.

Preoccupation and sense of uncertainty are still present, as Zambia – like everywhere – is still in the middle of the pandemic.

After completing the two new toilets earlier this year (you can read the details in previous reports), the construction works at Katulumba had stopped. In fact, the next steps are building a block of 3 classrooms and, even more important in this time of pandemic, two sanitary blocks (8 flush toilets plus 7 basins each, one for girls and one for boys). These future works require more funds than the previous ones, and the construction will start as soon as there are enough funds to build the foundations for the first toilets' block.

Now, due to the emergency of Covid-19, in the last months many donations were given to Covid-19 related projects; we just hope to have more donations for this project in the next months, so to start with the construction of the toilets as soon as possible.

To quickly resume the situation of the Katulumba school: until one year ago, before this fundraising campaign started, 600 children and 9 teachers shared 3 classrooms and 8 latrines - the same facilities built to accommodate 84 children more than 10 years ago. In this last year, thanks to the generosity of our donors, the 4th classroom was finished, and two (flush) toilets (and their septic tank) were constructed and are now ready to be used - one for the boys, one for the girls! They are used by the children with sensitive issues, such as girls on their period or those with fragile health. Waiting for the new toilets to be built, the old latrines (unhygienic and insufficient in number) will still be used by the other pupils and teachers.

With your continuous support we will reach our final goal - building another 16 toilets and 3 additional classrooms.

Education should not be a privilege, and every effort needs to be spent to ensure that the right to education is assured to every single child. We are building the future of the Katulumba School children, one step at a time.

Thank you for building with us a better future!
