The last year and a half we all suffered major changes in our lives; the pandemic stroke developed and undeveloped countries alike. Many countries, like Zambia, have underdeveloped health care systems, and there the prevention and measures to limit the spread of Covid-19 are, if possible, even more important than in the developed countries.
Zambia went through several pandemic waves, the last one this summer: in June, once again, the schools were closed to help stopping the increasing daily cases.
The Covid-19 vaccinations are pacing quickly in most of the developed countries, while in the whole Africa less than 2% of the population has been fully vaccinated.

In this situation, having schools with proper sanitation and enough space to sit the kids, is crucial. For the Katulumba School, at the Fishing Camp in Siavonga, is still a dream.
When we started this project, we could, quite quickly thanks to many generous donors, finish a 4th classroom and the firts 2 toilets. Then, the pandemic started, and comprehensibly, the funds to be raised for this project  started to slow down, as many went for the sanitary emergency.

As per today, from the beginning of the fundraising, we raised around 5285$, of which 4400$ were spent to build the classroom, the 2 toilets, the septic tank. We have now available around 900$. We need to raise another 16000$, to be able to build one of the 3 important blocks that will make of Katulumba School a decent place to learn: 1) the block with 3 classrooms, to bring the total of classrooms to 7 (one for each school year); 2) the sanitary block for girls (8 toilets and 7 sinks); 3) a similar sanitary block for boys.

The school population, since the start of the project, has grown to 608 pupils. Currently, they are learning in 4 classroms on 3 shifts/day, and have at dispostal 2 toilets and 8 latrines.

We look forward to share with you good news in the next report, hoping to have enough money to start with the next phase of the project. Continue to follow us!

As the pandemic eases all over the world, and students globally return to school, it is important to remember the inequalities still faced by those who began less fortunate. Access to hygiene facilities is paramount to reducing the spread of the virus. Unfortunately due to the overpopulated nature of the school, social distancing can be very difficult.  Thanks to the help of our amazing donors we have already made fantastic headway on this project. Providing an additional classroom and 2 toilet blocks.

We hope to provide proper facilities to cater for the number of students within the school to ensure every child has access to quality and safe education. Already, our fantastic donors have raised almost $5000 towards the next phase of the project, however, we cannot start building until we have enough to see at least one structure completed. The final build will see a further 3 classrooms and 2 sanitary blocks containing 8 flush toilets and 7 basins each.

Education should not be a privilege, and every effort needs to be spent to ensure that the right to education is assured to every single child. We are building the future of the Katulumba School children, one step at a time.

With your continued support, we know we will be able to reach this goal. Thank you for building with us a better future!

After being in lockdown for several months, classes resumed at Katulumba school. It has been an exceedingly difficult year so far, with pupils unable to go to school for long months, and with no possibility to learn from home through e-learning, as was done in developed countries.

Preoccupation and sense of uncertainty are still present, as Zambia – like everywhere – is still in the middle of the pandemic.

After completing the two new toilets earlier this year (you can read the details in previous reports), the construction works at Katulumba had stopped. In fact, the next steps are building a block of 3 classrooms and, even more important in this time of pandemic, two sanitary blocks (8 flush toilets plus 7 basins each, one for girls and one for boys). These future works require more funds than the previous ones, and the construction will start as soon as there are enough funds to build the foundations for the first toilets' block.

Now, due to the emergency of Covid-19, in the last months many donations were given to Covid-19 related projects; we just hope to have more donations for this project in the next months, so to start with the construction of the toilets as soon as possible.

To quickly resume the situation of the Katulumba school: until one year ago, before this fundraising campaign started, 600 children and 9 teachers shared 3 classrooms and 8 latrines - the same facilities built to accommodate 84 children more than 10 years ago. In this last year, thanks to the generosity of our donors, the 4th classroom was finished, and two (flush) toilets (and their septic tank) were constructed and are now ready to be used - one for the boys, one for the girls! They are used by the children with sensitive issues, such as girls on their period or those with fragile health. Waiting for the new toilets to be built, the old latrines (unhygienic and insufficient in number) will still be used by the other pupils and teachers.

With your continuous support we will reach our final goal - building another 16 toilets and 3 additional classrooms.

Education should not be a privilege, and every effort needs to be spent to ensure that the right to education is assured to every single child. We are building the future of the Katulumba School children, one step at a time.

Thank you for building with us a better future!

The whole Zambia, the town of Siavonga and the Community School Katulumba are experiencing a situation very similar to the one in many countries: preoccupation and sense of uncertainty.

Altough the numbers of Covid-19 in Zambia are lower than in many countries, the situation is very delicate. In order to prevent as much as possible the spread of the virus, a lockdown is present since mid march. Schools are closed, and in the summer they resumed only for 7th graders, who need to write their exams before year's end.
The country is not prepared to face a pandemic in the magnitude that hit developed countries: it would be a tragedy.

The good news is that the 7th graders (and the teachers) have at disposal the two new toilets, of which you can read the details in the previous report: two flush toilets, with a septic tank are ready to be used. A very convenient timing, in a circumstance where hygiene is more important than ever.

Regarding the next steps of the project, after the immense progresses made before the summer, we are now in the process of collecting enough money to start with the first (of two) sanitary block (8 flush toilets plus 7 basins).
This future works require more funds than the previous ones, and the construction will start as soon as there are enough funds to build the fundations for the toilets' block.
Due to the emergency of Covid-19, in the last months many donations were given to Covid-19 related projects; now, that in many countries the emergency is fortunately over, we start to see donations flowing again on this project: thanks!
We really hope that, in the next report, we can share with you the beginning of the 1st toilets' block construction!

It is with great joy we are writing this report as immense progress has been made. Although the schools are closed in Zambia due to the Coronavirus, the construction works continues.

As you may remember, Katulumba school, in spite of the devotion of the teachers, struggled to function smoothly, as it lacked the space to accommodate the growing number of children and did not offer basic sanitary facilities such as toilets: 600 children shared 3 classrooms and 8 latrines.

However in the last few months a lot has changed, thanks to the generosity of you, our donors. In the last report we showed you the septic tank (to serve the first two toilets) under construction. Now the septic tank is finished and the two newly constructed (flush) toilets are ready to be used - one for the boys, one for the girls.
Waiting for more funds to accumulate to build 2 toilet blocks (8 toilets for girls, 8 for boys), these first two toilets will be used by the children with sensitive issues such as girls on their period or those with fragile health.

Another great news: the 4th class room is also finished and ready to be used! Once the situation with the Coronavirus outbreak subdues and the schools can open again, the students will find a much more suitable environment to learn.

With your continuous support we have come closer to our goal: building another 16 toilets and 3 additional classrooms.

Education is a privilege and every effort needs to be spent to ensure the right and opportunity is offered to every human being. We are building the future one child at a time.

Thank you for building with us a better future!
