Summary

Our project is a platform that systematizes and spread as public information the result of the analysis of conversations on Twitter and the media about the migrant population in different cities of Colombia. Our objective is to shape narratives and negative language that causes the massive spread of hate speech towards migrants and refugees in Colombia and create an alert system to inform key stakeholders that can provide support and mitigate risks in the territories.

Challenge

The increase in the migratory flow of Venezuelans to Colombia has been accompanied by growing outbreaks of xenophobia, this constitutes a threat to democracy. It is worrying that some authorities and opinion leaders promote negative narratives such as exclusion, hostility, lack of empathy and mutual fear. These are manifested not only on the streets but also on digital platforms, social networks and the media, which function as a sounding board for xenophobia, fake news and hatred.

Solution

Corporacion Otraparte, in alliance with the Observatorio de Migraciones de la Universidad Externado de Colombia and Fundacion Interpreta, which has developed a data processing methodology that allows studying the contents of digital platforms, launches a monitoring of expressions of xenophobia against migrants in the cities of Bogota, Barranquilla, Cali, Cucuta and Medellin and creates an alert system to inform key actors who can provide support and mitigate risks.

Long-Term Impact

Understand and make visible the problem of xenophobia, misinformation and incitement to hatred on digital platforms against migrants. Alert about the appearance and growth of xenophobic and discriminatory discourses, possible attacks and manifestations of violence, and attempts to manipulate public opinion. Contribute to timely decision-making and protection measures and public information in response to risks to migrants, by providing key actors with information on these risks in real time.
