The earthquake that hit the Ecuadorian coast on April 16 left thousands of farming and urban-rural families without a home. They had to immediately search for shelter to protect them from the rain, cold night time temperatures and insects.
During the first week after the earthquake, many Ecuadorians decided to help in any way they could. The response we received was of such a large magnitude, that we thought that the best thing we could do was helping those affected by sending them prefabricated bamboo structures, with low-cost, light weight material for the roofs that could reflect the sun’s heat. That’s how the concept for CAEMBA Emergent Bamboo Homes was born. We didn’t want this to be a short-term solution because we recognized that in a country like Ecuador, housing solutions after a disaster of this caliber could take many years. That’s why we designed a spacious, cool structure that could be built in a short amount of time, which its inhabitants could then improve and complete according to their resources and make it their own home on a medium and long term basis.
Two years have gone by and we are still working with donations basically from friends. We need your help, the government cannot cover homes for more than 30.000 people that are still living in miserable conditions.
