By James Perry | Hon Sec., Rotary Club of Ballymena.
Members of the Rotary Club of Ballymena have been enthusiastic supporters of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative for many years. Rotarians across the world have been working since 1985 to help rid the world of polio. The Ballymena Club members have raised almost £15000 over recent years. Regular fundraising events have been held in support of the Rotary international effort to achieve the eradication of this debilitating disease.
The current Covid 19 pandemic has meant that it has not been possible to undertake our traditional fundraising activities. Members were determined, however, to assist in achieving the prospect of a polio free world. Africa has recently been declared wild polio free but the job is not yet complete. Particular pockets of the disease still exist in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Proceeds from a recent Fireside Quiz were directed through GlobalGiving resulting in the magnificent total of approximately £1260 being raised. Members were delighted at the donations made by members of our local community and we know that this amount can help make a difference.
The fight to end Polio for good still has some way to go but Ballymena Rotarians are delighted to have been able to once again contribute to the international campaign which Rotary has been undertaking to secure a polio free world. Without total eradication, over 200000 children are at risk across the world. The disease is only an aeroplane journey away so the fight still goes on!
Our sincere thanks to everyone who supported our recent fundraising initiative.
