Strengthening Family Care in India

Thanks to your support, we’re helping to drive real change in India’s child protection system—helping more children grow up in safe, loving families rather than institutions. Here’s what we achieved during this reporting period: 

Key Achievements 

Inclusive Care Reform: Published the National Inclusive Care Reform Learning Exchange report and completed a Rapid Assessment on Disability and Care Reform. Partnerships for Change: Deepened collaborations India: Jharkhand, and Odisha, to strengthen child protection systems and make disability inclusion a national priority. 

Community Empowerment (through our partner, CINI): 

• Held 10 community awareness meetings in Ranchi and Khunti, reaching 225 parents and community members with information on foster care, adoption, and family support. 
• Conducted life skills sessions with 68 children in care institutions, building resilience and confidence. 
• Engaged in the statewide Anti-Drug Abuse Campaign, reaching over 100 adolescents and officials with awareness sessions on the links between substance abuse, family breakdown, and child protection.
• Safe Spaces: Supported assessments of community-led safe spaces in Ranchi and Khunti. Encouragingly, children showed improved school attendance, confidence, and family relationships—evidence that family and community-based support works. 

Looking Ahead 

In the coming months, we will: 

• Expand disability-inclusive care reform across more states. 

• Strengthen local child protection committees in Jharkhand to monitor and support vulnerable children more effectively. 

• Scale up advocacy with government and donors to redirect funding away from orphanages and into family and community-based solutions. 

• Develop more training resources to support care reform champions—families, professionals, and care leavers.
