There's such a positive energy during Back to School time, isn't there? We feel it in Belize, just as in the US and other parts of the world. In Belize, high school started on August 27th, and Facebook was filled with "first day" photos as students headed out for another year of school.
Our PathLight student centers are again buzzing with activity. We missed seeing the students every day during the summer, so the past few weeks have been ones of catching up and reconnecting.
The students look so sharp in their fresh new uniforms and backpacks crammed with books and supplies. Their textbooks are filled with new and exciting information to stretch their minds. PathLight's after school programming is underway with new ideas for character formation and mentoring.
But in Belize, there is something extra special that's present during Back to School time. These students feel a real sense of gratitude for the opportunity to continue their education They are keenly aware that not all their friends and neighbors have been blessed with such an opportunty. Their letters reflect their appreciation, and the realization (as much as teenagers can) of the magnitude of the gift they have received.
As adults, we know the difference an education can make. We understand that these young people will become the future leaders of Belize - the ones to change the trajectory of this young and floundering country, and re-center it on a positive path. Without the support of generous sponsors, none of that would be possible.
As we celebrate Back to School, we take time to thank our generous donors and sponsors for their love, support and encouragement. Together we are making a difference. Together we are providing real hope for these deserving young people.
