The Fish Springs Land Preserve in Nevada, acquired by AWHC in 2023, safeguards critical habitat for the iconic Fish Springs wild horse herd. Covering 3,300 acres, this preserve encompasses diverse ecosystems such as sagebrush steppe, wetlands, and riparian area that includes a rare wet meadow. The land provides essential resources for wild horses and a rich biodiversity of wildlife, including bears, antelope deer, mountain lions, bald eagles, hawks and many other types of animals.
*Land Acquisition: Federally-protected wild horses and burros live on public lands managed by the government, often surrounded by and interspersed with private lands. *Habitat Restoration: Most of the West's rangelands are in degraded condition due to overgrazing of livestock, mining, and oil and gas development. *Humane Management: The federal govt uses traumatic and often deadly forms of population control, through helicopter roundups, bait traps, and inhumane long-term holding facilities.
*Land Acquisition: Presents numerous opportunities to enhance wild horse and burro habitat and alleviate conflicts that can sometimes arise between private landowners and wild horses, burros, and other wildlife species. *Habitat Restoration: Protects critical riparian corridors and wildlife water access to two year-round creeks. *Humane Management: Support fertility control programs and reduce the need for traumatic roundup, removal, and warehousing of wild horses and burros.
