This project will establish free, mobile ear acupuncture clinics across the Netherlands to support refugees from the Balkans, Africa, the Middle East, and Ukraine. Acupuncture provides gentle, effective care for pain, stress, and trauma experienced by refugees and migrating people. Unresolved trauma not only impacts individual health, but also the well being of families and communities, often with lasting consequences. Trauma-informed acupuncture treatment can change this trajectory.
Refugees often endure profound physical and emotional challenges. Fleeing conflict, persecution, or disaster, many face dangerous journeys, deprivation, and uncertainty. Once they reach a place of safety, they must navigate unfamiliar cultures, languages, and systems while trying to rebuild their lives-often without family, community support, or access to healthcare. These experiences often adversely affect not only individual health but also the long-term well-being of families and communities.
For over 20 years, AWB has seen how acupuncture, massage, and plant-based medicine can help reset the system-reducing pain, stress, anxiety, and depression, while improving sleep and overall well-being. The result: People feel more like themselves, they often regain hope, and are better able to solve problems and move forward to rebuild their lives. We also collaboratively train practitioners to do this work in their own communities since they best understand and know their unique needs.
Through their mobilization efforts and support of local acupuncturists and volunteers, AWB NL is able to provide free trauma-informed care directly to refugees in need, while partnering with local refugee support organizations and NGOs. This approach allows AWB NL to expand its support sustainably, addressing trauma and helping reduce the long-term health impacts on individuals, families, and communities.
