One of the most important aspects of this project--Care for AWARE's Ambassador Animals--is how we enrich their lives. AWARE's Ambassador Animals cannot be released back to the wild as a result of permanent injuries they suffered that interfere with their ability to survive in the wild. Some of our birds can't fly properly, other animals have vision problems, and some never developed a fear of humans--arguably one of the worst predators on the planet. Our Ambassador Animals did not choose to become injured. The majority of injuries or issues that have occurred to them were secondary to conflict or interaction with humans. In consideration of the human footprint across Georgia's wildlife, AWARE takes its responsibility to our Ambassador Animals very seriously. We respect that these animals are wild and provide daily enrichment and stimulation activities to enhance their lives. In this way, AWARE hopes to give back some of the wild spontaneity that was taken away from them when they came into captivity.
AWARE volunteers and staff have done a fantastic job researching and discovering new ways our Ambassador Animals can interact with their environment and each other. Who knew that a box turtle and a corn snake would enjoy each other's company so much? As a result of this disovery, we are considering a permanent combined enclosure where the two can spend more time together. Here's a sneak peak at the two of them together: Mary Shelli & Legs. Of course the reptiles don't have to have all the fun! Cat Ballou, our resident bobcat, is enjoying some time with a favorite bear stuffed animal. It helps that we've rubbed some attractive animal smells on it: Cat Ballou & the Bear. This provides over an hour of entertainment and enrichment for Ballou. Finally, Tappy the barred owl enjoys some time looking for the source of the elusive barred owl: Tappy & the ball. Thank you for all that you have done so far to help Georgia's native wildlife. Your continued financial support of this project provides our volunteers and staff with the tools they need to continue to enrich the lives of our Ambassador Animals. Spread the word to your family and friends!
So...what do you think about what you've seen so far? Maybe you have some additional ideas about what AWARE can do to further enrich Georgia's wild lives.
Special Note: As with all of our enrichment videos and photos, the volunteers and staff are experienced and trained wildlife handlers. None of the activities portrayed here should ever be attempted with wildlife unless you are properly permitted and licensed by your area's governing authority and trained. Thank you for respecting the Earth's wild animals!--Dr. Tarah
