Winter has brought a new ambassador to AWARE - Grape, the Virginia Opossum! Our previous ambassador opossum, Sydney, passed away last fall after a long (for an opossum) and happy life, so we began watching our non-releasable patients for a new ambassador. Grape, a juvenile who had been hit by a car and suffered neurological symptoms that prevented release seemed to be a good candidate. She got her name when a volunteer suggested it on the basis that "opossums are GRAPE!" Yeah, we have a lot of puns here, I'm afraid. But Grape has settled in nicely and done a few in person programs with visitors to the center. In the coming months she will start going to schools and teaching young and old about the virtues of peaceful coexistence. Thank you for supporting her care!
