Baby season was upon us before we knew it, so in addition to persevering with the water-bird enclosure, we decided to use some of your generous donations to improve exisiting spaces.
The garage area we had sectioned off last year was given a face-lift and officially designated as the passerine nursery. We still lack the dream aviary, but this is a huge improvement on what we have used in the past. Already this year it has housed several clay robins and grackles, a mocking bird, hummingbirds, aracaris, several doves, a frigate bird and other water-birds, a squirrel and many raptors (when there are no passerines of course!)
We also added a window and wash basin to the ‘Hobbit Room’ where we raise the baby parrots. It has made the space much more practical and hygienic, and given a light, fresh atmosphere for our near-fledged babies.
And finally, the downstairs windows for the nurseries and clinic were fitted with predator-proof fly screens – something that has been a constant cause of concern. Thanks to your generosity, we can breathe a little easier at night!
The water-bird room got a roof, doors, a ceiling, predator-screens, electrics and plumbing, and the interior was given a coat of swimming-pool paint. Gorgeous!
Work continued on the pool: we now have a water-tight wading and bathing pool for any web-footed visitor that may come our way. The final step will be the surrounding aviary and then we are ready to move in!
We only need $1500 more to finish this project. Please share and help us to achieve our goal. Pelican season is not too far away: it would be fantastic to have this done before they start to arrive.
We and the Birds of Belize thank you all once again for your kindness and generosity!
