Recently, Ruby, the young red-necked wallaby, arrived at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital alone and vulnerable. Ruby had a heartbreaking start to life - her mum was tragically hit by a car, leaving Ruby orphaned.
Ruby remained in her mother’s pouch for some time before she was thankfully discovered and brought to the dedicated veterinary team. Despite the safety of her mother’s pouch, Ruby had sustained abdominal injuries and required urgent treatment. She was transferred to the Nursery ICU where, like many orphaned joeys, she faced a few challenges in her recovery. It took some time for her to adjust to formula feeding, but with expert care from our amazing veterinary team, she quickly regained her strength and confidence.
Once her condition stabilised, Ruby was transferred to a specialised wildlife carer to provide her with the long-term love and support she needs to be able to return to the wild.
Unfortunately, stories just like Ruby’s are all too common, especially this time of year. September marks the beginning of spring in South-east Queensland and the start of trauma season at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital. As temperatures rise, so too do the Wildlife Hospital’s patient admissions. Every year from September to January, the number of wildlife coming through the doors almost triples as many species enter breeding season. As wildlife begin to move around in the warmer months, in search of a mate or suitable habitat, domestic pets and busy roads pose a greater threat to wildlife.
