COIN has worked since 2016 to identify and provide services to children who are victims of commercial sexual exploitation, sexual abuse, and violence. Given the need and the exceptional results achieved, the government of Veron/ Punta Cana has donated 2,000 m of land for the construction of a Center to provide psychological, medical and legal services to these children and teenagers and work with the community and families to improve their lives and ensure they can thrive in a safe environment
The Dominican Republic is one of the leading countries in child marriage, child trafficking, and teenage pregnancy. Many children in the Punta Cana area are engaged in commercial sexual exploitation, a practice that is fueled by the tourism industry, or are victims of sexual abuse. COIN has worked with the children, families, the broader community and the local government to identify these children and teenagers and provide psychological and medical attention to them, but more needs doing.
Given the exceptional results reached, Veron/Punta Cana's local government has donated 2000 square meters of land for the construction of a Center for the integral care of those children. The Center will provide psychological, legal and medical services as well as shelter for those children that need protection. It will also provide with education, and leisure opportunities to help them overcome their situation and thrive. It will also work with the parents to improve their parenting skills.
The project will provide integral services to 150 children per year from commercial sexual exploitation, human trafficking and other forms of violence, allowing them to enjoy their infancy and develop healthy self-esteem that will help them achieve their goals in the future.
