Through the power of rugby, UmRio works in marginalised communities across Rio de Janeiro State to make meaningful and long-lasting change in the lives of children and young people. Together with education, healthcare, employability and social welfare programming, rugby becomes the platform we use to build possibilities, engaging young people and providing tangible support and interconnected opportunities for educational, professional, and personal development.
Young people in Rio de Janeiro State's favelas face heavy realities. In UmRio's partner community Morro do Castro, 80% of residents live on less than US$2.15 per day while 49% live on less than US$1 per day. Additionally, the pandemic deepened these inequalities and worsened the learning gap and school abandonment amongst young people living in Rio's marginalized communities. UmRio works to provide greater opportunities for young people to disrupt these realities and build better futures.
UmRio provides a comprehensive approach to all our work, where rugby is the spark which ignites meaningful change in the lives of Rio de Janeiro State's most vulnerable and marginalised young people. By leveraging rugby as a vehicle for social change, we reduce school abandonment and truancy; promote youth leadership opportunities; improve academic performance; identify and support learning disabilities; improve soft skills; foster a safe environment; promote goal setting and life skills.
Through greater access to opportunities for young people, UmRio provides a holistic and integrated 5-pillar development model centered around need rooted within rugby, education, employability, healthcare, and social welfare programming. With this support, UmRio participants will continue to demonstrate greater learning outcomes, educational attainment, self-efficacy, self-confidence, sense of belonging, communication skills and self-esteem than their peers.
