The sessions aimed to encourage households to adopt safer practices, pay greater attention to the condition of their electrical installations, and remain vigilant about hazards that could cause fires.

A total of ten households were reached through these awareness-raising activities.

3.2. Mobilization of GRAD-ASBL’s Own Resources

Due to insufficient external funding, GRAD-ASBL mobilized USD 50 from its own resources to organize the two awareness-raising sessions.

This contribution demonstrates the organization’s determination to continue its humanitarian mission despite financial constraints. It also reflects its commitment to standing alongside vulnerable families even when external contributions remain extremely limited.

However, the scale of these interventions remains insufficient compared with the extent of humanitarian needs in the affected areas. Awareness-raising activities provide an important preventive response, but they cannot, on their own, resolve the housing shortages and lack of essential household items faced by fire-affected families.

4. FUNDING STATUS AND CHALLENGES

During the third quarter of 2026, the project received only USD 1 in donations through GlobalGiving. Since the project was published on the platform, the total amount of donations recorded has reached USD 13, according to the information available to the organization.

In addition, GRAD-ASBL contributed USD 50 from its own resources to implement the community awareness activities.

These figures highlight the significant gap between the financial resources available and the actual needs of the beneficiaries. The donations mobilized so far are insufficient to finance shelter reconstruction, the purchase of essential household items, and assistance to displaced families.

The main challenge remains mobilizing additional resources to move beyond a primarily preventive response toward direct material assistance that adequately addresses the severity of the humanitarian situation.

GRAD-ASBL sincerely thanks every donor who has contributed to the project. Regardless of the amount, each contribution helps sustain this initiative and bring the plight of affected families to the attention of the international community.

5. PRIORITY NEEDS OF FIRE-AFFECTED FAMILIES

Based on the needs identified, the project’s main priority is to support families affected by fires so that they can regain adequate shelter and restore dignified living conditions.

The priority interventions planned under the project include the following:

5.1. Construction of Wooden-Plank Shelters

The project aims to support families whose homes have been destroyed or rendered uninhabitable by helping them construct simple houses made of wooden planks.

This assistance will help protect families from adverse weather conditions, reduce repeated displacement, and support their gradual return to stability.

Implementation will take into account construction safety, the availability of materials, and land occupancy arrangements.

5.2. Distribution of Food and Essential Household Items

Families who have lost their household belongings need material and food assistance to resume their daily lives.

The project therefore plans to provide essential household items and food supplies, in line with the activities originally outlined in the project proposal. This support will help households regain a minimum level of comfort, security, and dignity.

5.3. Continued Awareness-Raising and Fire Risk Prevention

GRAD-ASBL intends to continue community awareness activities on domestic fire prevention, particularly the dangers associated with faulty electrical installations and unsafe household practices.

These preventive measures will complement material assistance and help reduce the risk of future fire incidents.

6. URGENT APPEAL TO GLOBALGIVING AND DONORS

Given the severity of the situation and the limited funding currently available, GRAD-ASBL is making an urgent appeal to GlobalGiving, humanitarian partners, foundations, businesses, the Congolese diaspora, and all people of goodwill.

The affected families are not asking for luxury. They need a roof over their heads, essential household items, and a safer environment in which to rebuild their lives after devastating losses.

We invite donors to contribute toward the construction of wooden-plank houses and the purchase of essential household items for fire-affected families. Increased financial support would enable GRAD-ASBL to turn solidarity into concrete and measurable humanitarian assistance.

Every contribution matters. Donations of USD 1, USD 2, USD 10, USD 50, USD 100, or more can help advance this collective effort. Every donation, regardless of its size, brings the project closer to achieving its humanitarian objectives.

We also encourage supporters to share the project with their networks to increase its visibility and help mobilize additional assistance.

7. PLANS FOR THE NEXT QUARTER

During the next quarter, GRAD-ASBL intends to:

  • Continue raising household awareness of domestic fire prevention.

  • Strengthen resource mobilization efforts with donors and humanitarian partners.

  • Prioritize the identification and assessment of families requiring emergency shelter.

  • Seek the financial and material resources needed to construct wooden-plank houses.

  • Organize the distribution of essential household items, subject to available funding.

  • Strengthen beneficiary follow-up and documentation of project results.

Achieving these objectives will depend on the availability of financial and material resources. GRAD-ASBL remains committed to the responsible management of all funds received and to reporting on their use to partners and donors.

8. CONCLUSION

The third quarter of 2026 was an especially difficult period for communities in Bukavu, which faced recurrent fires, loss of life, and worsening living conditions among affected families.
