Progress to Date
We have received and acknowledged the €9 contribution raised and transferred through GlobalGiving—our sincere thanks to the GlobalGiving team and all donors.
With this initial funding, we have begun registering the 315 fire victims in Bukavu (the project location) and conducted an initial needs assessment.
Through outreach activities, our team contacted about ten households and began documenting the beneficiaries' specific needs (shelter, basic supplies, psychosocial support).
2. Challenges and Delays
Unfortunately, the project's progress remains slower than expected, as three donors have released $11 of the $184,706 total over eleven months.
In the eastern part of the DRC (where Bukavu is located), the security and humanitarian situation has further deteriorated: beneficiaries, already deprived of significant assistance, are now facing increased distress due to a renewed occupation war affecting both Bukavu and the neighboring city of Goma.
The combination of slow donor response and increased local needs means that many of the 315 fire victims remain without substantial assistance.
3. Impact to Date
Although full assistance is not yet in place, a better understanding of the beneficiaries' plight has been gained, and we have laid the foundations for future interventions.
The beneficiary community now has a documented profile and a list of needs, which will allow for faster deployment of assistance once funding is secured.
GRAD continues to collaborate with partners and local stakeholders to ensure readiness as soon as resources become available.
4. Next Steps: Next Steps
Urgent Fundraising: We are appealing to the GlobalGiving community, our friends, benefactors, and partners to respond to this urgent crisis in Bukavu. Every donation counts to save lives at risk.
Resource Mobilization: GRAD is exploring multiple funding sources (local donors, international foundations, in-kind donations) that are unfortunately not available to supplement GlobalGiving's contribution.
Program Implementation: Once sufficient resources are available, we plan to distribute relief kits (shelter, basic household items), provide psychosocial support, and establish referral pathways for longer-term reconstruction.
Monitoring and Reporting: We will ensure transparent reporting on fund use, beneficiary feedback, and impact indicators. We are committed to providing additional funding.
Acknowledgments:
We are deeply grateful for your collaboration, for the donations already raised, for your support, and for your willingness to help those suffering in Bukavu. GRAD remains fully committed to this cause and open to any form of assistance that can respond to this urgent appeal.
Sincerely,
Adrien M'MASSA
