RACEJAY'S HEALTH UPDATE

By Good Neighbors Philippines | Project Leader

Born with a defect called imperforate anus, Racejay has been discharging waste through the stoma, the opening created on the abdominal wall during a surgery called Colostomy. Usually, a colostomy bag is wrapped around the stoma to collect stool or waste. In the case of Racejay, his mother uses ice or plastic wrappers since they can not  afford to regularly buy colostomy bags.

Last January, the child had a consultation at a local hospital in Tacloban City where he underwent laboratory procedures to determine if he is physically fit and healthy to undergo operation. Unfortunately, there were some concerns on the X-ray results so further laboratory examinations were ordered in order for the doctors to arrive at a diagnosis and give Racejay the clearance to undergo his surgery.

A CT Scan was ordered for Racejay when the doctor found a suspicious compression deformity on his bone. Fortunately, result showed that the child is negative for Tuberculosis of the Bone but the attending doctor insisted an MRI to pinpoint what was causing the deformity noted on the previous examination. The family was able to avail assistance from a social welfare center called Malasakit and from a congress party list for the MRI which cost $ 255.

Result of Racejay's MRI showed that the child has a congenital problem on his spine. There was a rightward curvature on the cervical, upper thoracic, lower thoracic, and lumbar spines that should be regularly monitored as there is no treatment available for this kind of condition. Also noting that this will not in any way affect the surgical procedure, the doctor gave the requests for pre-operative clearance.

Currently, Racejay is still waiting for the clearance and, after that, his operation schedule.
