Summary

A flash flood starting on 21 August has inundated 11 districts across eastern and southern Bangladesh, stranding 1.2 million, affecting 5.7 million people and killing at least 23. The situation - both immediate and long-term is dire. Rescue and relief are required, followed by rehabilitation and restoration as the waters recede. Please help us to provide the necessary medical and relief interventions so people can get their lives back to normal, and stand up for those affected.

Challenge

A flood of this scale has not been seen in the region in 30 years. Roads, railways, power lines and other avenues of access and infrastructure have been cut off by the sudden and unexpected onrush of water. The local populations have been taken completely by surprise, and were woefully unprepared. They are struggling to cope, and every little bit of aid and assistance will make a difference. Fortunately, Friendship has 22 years of experience in dealing with floods in remote areas of the country.

Solution

Friendship will provide assistance to 52,000 people through relief distribution, with another 30,000 aided by medical camps in 7 districts, including the distribution of food relief and hygiene packs for 13,000 families. 8 mobile water treatment plants will be deployed, 360 medical camps run by 8 medical teams, 250 solar power kits will be distributed, each of which can charge 8-10 mobile phones at a time and livestock fodder provided for 800 families. You can assist in providing the above.

Long-Term Impact

82,000 people across 7 districts in 3 divisions will benefit from Friendship's relief distribution, interventions and medical camps. Most of these districts are not the usual working areas, but Friendship has 22 years of experience in dealing with such situations, making it uniquely qualified to deal with not just floods, but also inaccessibility. Friendship will work together with other organisations and the government to ensure emergency aid and rehabilitate the affected areas.
