I thought you'd like to know that the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society recently featured an article on this project, in the publication "Ergonomics in Design." A PDF of the article is available on our website. The article emphasizes the systems approach that enabled user-centered ergonomic design of the bench and empowers the weavers to create meaningful change in a culture in which kneeling, rather than sitting, had been the norm for women.

In the words of Berta Ángela Cotuc Navichoc, mother of the Maya carpenter who makes the bench in Guatemala: “Every day I use the bench that my son made. It’s beautiful, and I don’t just mean to look at but that it’s truly useful. It’s so comfortable that you don’t feel the time passing, and it lets you weave faster. I hope that all the weavers can have a bench one day.”

We share Berta’s dream! Thank you for your continued interest and support for our ongoing efforts to advance this project from Guatemala to Mexico.
