Thank you for your support of Arts For All (AFA). The 2015-2016 school year is coming to a close and Arts For All’s programs are wrapping up as well.

Literacy Through the Arts finished its programs for grades K – 2 at Hamilton Heights Elementary School in Harlem and PS15 Elementary in the Lower East Side. The final presentation was the students’ adaptations of the story The Three Little Pigs.

High School students at Brooklyn’s The Green School completed a creative writing/poetry residency. Through the 10-week program, teaching artist Jon Sands guided the students through different writing styles and approaches. Showing them examples of spoken word artists in action as well as giving them time each class for free write, writing nonstop for five minutes, sometimes on a specific prompt. The last day, several students shared original pieces that were about everything from a place to go for comfort to smiling too much.

Arts For All returned to New Alternatives for Children where the children just performed their final show. Parents, family members, and staff all joined Arts For All for the performance Tuesday, May 31 which was titled “Inspiration”. Each student presented a monologue written by him or herself about a person that inspires them. Following the students sang the song “Lean on Me” going between ensemble singing to solos. The students also presented a dance piece at the end, and finished the performance by bringing parents and family members into the performance space to dance with them. The title of this performance piece was a perfect fit, as these students certainly inspired those around them, as well as one another.

Arts For All was also thrilled for the return of the Haiku program, thanks to donor Amy Losak. Students at PS76 in Queens combined visual arts and haiku after a very successful music and haiku program at the same school this past fall.

Thank you once again for your continued support of our mission. Without your help, we would not be able to reach thousands of under-served New York City children with our accessible arts programs.
