SERES IMAGINÁRIOS - Drawing is like Writing, and like Writing it is Liberating

The social technology, Arte Naturalista, stimulates a creative economy and environmental education through art. The goal is to create a social impact by incentivizing creativity in the fields of art and design. 

IPTI offers periodic workshops and exchanges with renowned artists for the students that take part in the Arte Naturalista project. In these workshops, young artists learn how to explore other possibilities in traditional drawing and painting techniques. 

One of the workshops is Seres Imaginários, administered by the visual artists Ronaldo Fraga and Miro Dantas. It seeks to expand the student’s perceptions beyond just illustrations of botanic nature, instead suggesting a new approach that focuses on human nature and its monsters. 

Workshop in 3 Stages

The first stage was on March 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th.

We invited alumni who had already been part of the project in previous years and demonstrated interest in continuing their learning for this stage. In total, ten alumni were selected, both teens and kids. The classes took place in various open spaces where the rich local landscape could be admired. 

In this first phase, the young artists engaged in activities to observe their surroundings, being encouraged to produce original works and avoid simple reproductions. In addition, they listened to music and connected with folk tales, popular myths, and imaginary and exotic beings to stimulate their creativity.

As a result of the first workshop, the artist Miro Dantas developed a print that incorporated elements from different illustrations made by the students. 

Next Steps

The second phase of the workshop will focus on researching new materials and the diverse techniques used to work with them. It will also feature artworks produced mainly by contemporary and modern artists.

The third phase will be centered on creating textile printing and molding techniques, also known as moulage. Finally, the students will develop costume designs directly on either live models or sewing dummies. This activity will be conducted before the actual production of the clothing, allowing them to visualize the piece in the space and its fit and volume. 

Workshop result

We expect to launch one of Ronaldo Fraga’s collections during São Paulo Fashion Week, which will occur in October of 2021. Furthermore, we also wish to launch a new collection of Casa do Cacete products!
