Our scholars' commitment to the arts - Q3 - 2016

By Horn Chanbopreuk | Development Coordinator

Our scholars’ commitment to the arts

As this year’s school year comes to a close, we want to share with you how far our students have learned and matured over the last months and some of their amazing personal achievements. Their dedication is truly inspiring to us, and we hope it inspires you too. Seeing the students rise and grow into their own as artists is why we hold the program, and why you join us in support.

Learning from the arts community is an important way for artists to improve their skills, learn about other art forms and projects, and to build the networks vital to their futures in the arts. Over the past months, our scholarship students did just that, integrating further into the arts sector in Cambodia and across Asia byjoining workshops, performing at different events and taking every chance to present their skills and learn more about the arts.

Workshops are a great way for scholars to challenge themselves and expand their personal and professional capacity. Each month we held an enrichment workshop for the students and at the same time encouraged them to participate in as many other workshops and arts activities around Phnom Penh as they could.

In January, the scholarship students were provided with a workshop titled “Money-Minded” through our enrichment program. Meanwhile, four scholars took advantage of the workshop conducted by ANZ Royal, a leading international bank in Cambodia, and learned how to set their goals.

February was a busier month! “Humanity and Responsibility” was the topic of the monthly enrichment program, conducted by Mr. Chim Chamroeun. The workshop taught our scholars how to think positively and give more attention to their mission. Improving and gaining more experience, one of our scholars Ms. Sokunthea joined the 3rd World Conference on Women, organized by The United Nations, an exciting program about women’s empowerment that considered the key global policy document on gender equality. It set strategic objectives and actions for the advancement of women and the achievement of gender.

In March, the scholars continued to be active and involved in the arts. They went to visit our founder Arn Chorn-Pond’s house and Mr. Sehas took the social initiative to raise some funds to buy some instruments for the group Khmer Kampuchea-Krom, youth who study traditional Khmer musical instruments, to promote the love of Cambodian culture among the youth.

Also in March, we held our Mid-Year Review with the scholars one by one. We could see their improvements of rating themselves, with a strong self-honestly about where they were at. We are extremely happy with their great feedback. The scholars reported that the program has helped them a lot for their study and personal growth and they felt truly appreciative to the Learning & Leadership team for being a good team player to support and help each other to move forward together.

April is the opening month to accept new scholarship applications for artistic and non-artistic students each year. Each year we are more and more impressed with the applications and we are excited as we start to look to the 2016-2017 scholarship year.  There were also a few events that were joined by our scholars. Some of them went to see the Tinis Tinos circus arts festival that is held in Phnom Penh every year and most of them, attended the Achievement and Talent event at the Royal University of Fine Arts (RUFA) which was led by Mr. Oem Veasna.

In May, we provided another workshop called “Effective Communication Skills” which taught our scholars to understand more about the advantages and effectiveness of communication. This month we conducted two special trainings, one called “The Arts of Financial Management” and the other, “The Arts of Selling”, both extremely vital skills for professional artists.

Our scholars did a great job this quarter, and we are very proud of their achievements. In January, our scholars Ms. Alen, Ms. Sereyroth and Ms. Mony were involved in a performance piece named “Pin Panhchak Por” at the famous Chaktomuk Theater in Phnom Penh. In February, Mr. Makara and Ms. Sokunthea helped an exhibition at RUFA. There were a lot of great performances in March and our scholar Ms. Sothearoth danced at Department of Performing Arts and another, Mr. Huyno, won a champion prize for his painting at the event The National Culture, which was really amazing for their achievement. In April, most of our scholars were very involved volunteering at the Angkor Sangkran festival during Khmer New Year and Ms. Sothearoth was also involved in the dancing for a celebration on King Norodom Sihamoni’s birthday. In May, there was a big achievement of Mr. El Huyno, who published two books named The Elephant with The Long Trunk and The Proud Chick. Finally, two of our scholars Mr. Chanrith and Ms. Sothearoth went to perform in China.

You can see how many opportunities and achievements our scholars reach and how truly dedicated they are in learning their craft.

One final special highlight to share is that in February several of our scholars were involved in making a video parody of Taylor Swift’s popular song Shake it Off, which was produced by the organization Epic Arts in partnership with many of the arts organizations in the region, including ourselves, Phare Ponleu Selpak, Tiny Toones and Amrita Performing Arts. The purpose of this video is to educate and empower Cambodian people to see ability, not disability and for the world to hear Cambodia's voice and spread the message that every person counts. We were thrilled some of the scholars and other CLA performers could participate and that we could offer our stage for part of the filming. The video is simply amazing and you cannot watch it without grinning ear-to-ear at its fun and powerful message. You can view here at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wU5XWNuV4vs.

Our scholarship students made a great step forward in their personal and professional development during the last five months of the 2015-16 year. With the support of you, our Global Giving Donors, we hope to see these developments growing next year and beyond.

We are so appreciative of your continued support. It has been a fantastic year and we are excited for our next year starting in the Fall.
