The AIDS Response Effort's LGBTQ+ Center in Winchester, Virginia, is dedicated to creating an inclusive and affirming space for all members of the LGBTQ+ community in the Northern Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Since opening in late 2023, the center has improved the lives of hundreds of people in this rural region. But there are many who aren't able to access the center. ARE is seeking funding to install a wheelchair lift to serve individuals with mobility impairments.
ARE's LGBTQ+ Center is located in an old bank building in historic Winchester, VA. Recently, the center has undergone renovations to create a safer and more welcoming environment. But without ADA accessibility features, we can't create an inclusive environment for everyone who needs access to vital healthcare resources, mental health support, prevention resources and community-building activities that are essential for the well-being of LGBTQ+ individuals and their families.
Installing a wheelchair lift is crucial to ensuring that everyone, regardless of physical ability, can fully participate in the center's programs and services. The addition of a wheelchair lift will not only enhance physical accessibility but also symbolize the center's commitment to inclusivity and equality. By removing barriers to entry, we can foster a more welcoming environment where all community members feel valued and supported.
ARE hopes to build its LGBTQ+ Center into a community hub for vital healthcare resources, education, special events and other support for not only LGBTQ+ individuals but the entire Northern Shenandoah Valley region.
