To raise funds to help Aquabox produce and deliver up 250 Gold boxes (each containing a family filter) and 10 Community filters to Yemen. The Aquafilters have the capacity to supply potable water to up to 8000 citizens. This helps avoid cholera and other waterborne diseases. A Gold box provides a family of 5 with a water filter and up to 70 humanitarian aids. The box contents help meet other immediate and urgent needs such as shelter building, cooking & eating, health & hygiene, education.
A horrific war in Yemen has resulted in extreme suffering in one of the poorest countries in the world. Millions of people have been displaced. A cholera epidemic has developed, so far affecting over 1 million citizens, with over 2500 deaths reported. Lack of access to clean water is the primary cause of this outbreak. Further infections can spread including typhoid, dysentery and polio. These conditions have a debilitating effect on a population trying to re-build its destroyed communities.
The filters are convenient and low maintenance. They can supply a family or a community (a village, school, medical centre). The filters' filtration systems remove 99% of water borne pathogens. This enhances the health outlook of citizens and their ability to redevelop communities, restore economic viability and help children access to education. In addition, our partner charity Jubilee Outreach Yorkshire (JOY) will donate medical supplies and school equipment.
The project provides immediate relief and yet filters have long lifetimes in the field (6+ years). They are portable so can go to where they are needed and they are extremely durable, a major benefit with the current upheaval in Yemen. A family filter can produce 500,000 litres of clean water at a rate of up to 1 litre per minute. A community filter can produce 1,000,000 litres of clean water at rate of up to 6 litres per minute. Incidentally this reduces the need for plastic bottles.
