Summary

Sadly, the demand for rhino horn has decimated rhino populations in Africa and on average, one rhino is poached every day on the continent. Here on Ol Pejeta, we fight the war on poaching 24/7 and our pack of four elite working dogs are paramount to our anti-poaching operation. Our K9 Unit is heavily reliant on donations and urgently needs your support.

Challenge

Efforts to combat poaching have become increasingly advanced, driven by developments in technology including night vision security cameras, drones and software such as EarthRanger. However, as we get smarter; poachers get smarter. The threat of poaching remains very high, and we must therefore respond with a variety of methods to ensure zero poaching on the Conservancy.

Solution

Diego, Sarah, Sugar, and Drum play a vital role in our anti-poaching operation. Not only do our working dogs act as a deterrent, but they are also highly skilled. Our bloodhounds are excellent tracking dogs and can follow a scent for miles whilst Drum, our only spaniel is trained to find guns and ammunition. All our dogs have received extensive training and are certified by the Kenyan Police.

Long-Term Impact

By donating to this project, you are helping to protect one of the most important wildlife conservancies in the world. We are the guardians of the world's rarest rhino and home to a myriad of other species in desperate need of protection. Our wildlife and the communities surrounding us are safer because of our K9 Unit. Our costs include dog and handler training, kenneling, veterinary care, dog food and much more. Thank you, we appreciate anything you can give.
