Our Lucky Iron Fish project update will be brief this time. First, we are happy to report that the Lucky Iron Fish (LIF) efficacy study was a success! Data analysis showed that parameters of iron status (hemoglobin and hematocrit) improved significantly in response to using the LIF. In fact, 80% of those that were anemic at the start of the study (March 2016) were no longer anemic when retested (March 2017). We hope to have our manuscript submitted for publication in the next few months. Studies such as this are difficult to implement, but it is rewarding to know that it makes a difference in people’s lives. The sucess of our study has generated a great deal of interest from other organizations that would like to implement similar programs in other countries. The more fish, the better! We are also in the process of starting another project that will test the iron content of food prepared with and without the LIF.
We are now preparing for our next trip to Guatemala, which is scheduled to begin on March 8, 2018. Once again, 25 students will be selected to participate in this 10-day medical mission. The application process opened this week, and we already have 5 applicants. There is a lot to do in preparation for our trip and the next cycle of LIF distribution. Your contributions make our work possible. Thank you for giving to this important cause.
Best,
Kathy and Ana Maria
