Harvest season is here! And it couldn’t be a more joyous time at Ancestral Acres Farm and Garden. With harvest season comes, many hands on the land. Many hands on the land brings ease, comfort, joy, and wonder as we celebrate the change of seasons from summer to fall, the cool air entering our lives, and the bounty our plants have to offer! All the hard work of caretaking and tending has finally paid off and now we get to enjoy the benefits of our collective care.
These past few months the farm has welcomed service members from FoodCorps New Mexico, teenage youth from New Mexico 2050, a local Nonprofit- Center of Southwest Culture, community volunteers of all ages, and of course the insects and birds!
With this welcoming, Ancestral Acres Farm and Garden has offered 25 lbs of green beans, several ears of blue corn,4 varieties of heirloom dry beans, wisdom teachings on seed saving and preservation, and of course lots of laughter. We hosted a work party in mid September where we held our first ever “Youth on the Land!” panel, where 3 youth who graduated from Rio Grande High School got to share with listeners their experiences around farming, growing food with their peers, and their hopes for the future. Their wisdom sharing will be uploaded to the AAFG blog on the Seeding Sovereignty website. Go check it out!
Moving forward, we are entering our first ever community blue corn harvest, where 1/8 acre of land is dedicated to growing blue corn for seed saving and food distribution! Furthermore, we are going to be cleaning up the fields, putting the land to rest, gathering our seeds, and preparing for the winter time with seed distribution, story telling, and reflection.
We are genuinely grateful for your continual support, sharing our messages, and of course keeping us going on Tiwa Territory. Thank you for taking the time to read this reflection and update! Feel free to share with your friends, relatives, and those who inspire you to do good in your community and your surroundings!
Until next time!
