Summary

We are excited to pursue our first-ever farming adventure as Ancestral Acres Farm and Garden! Through BIPOC stewardship, and in kinship with Queer and Trans folks, we aim to grow food for community redistribution and save seeds on Tiwa lands for future farming projects. With support, we will create physical wellness and healing space for our community to nourish their spirits and create avenues to needed food sovereignty for our neighbors, while providing food and nourishment to bodies as well.

Challenge

Food scarcity is prevalent within every city in the U.S. and after ongoing economic crises and the pandemic, more people are going hungry, especially within Indigenous and Black communities in states like New Mexico where COVID hit hardest in the last year. With little to no support on a state or federal level, Seeding Sovereignty has had to lean on our own local mutual aid efforts in Albuquerque to provide needed care and support to our neighbors. After a long winter, many are still in need.

Solution

We seek to address food deserts in Albuquerque through our farm, providing not only sustenance to those who need it but a way to reconnect to the land and begin working through the food, resource, and wellness issues faced by those most impacted this last year. Ancestral Acres seeks to be as much of a community farm and garden as it does to be a safe, intentional place of healing, centered around the wellness of LGBTQIA+ that are either Indigenous, Black, or people of the global majority in NM.

Long-Term Impact

In addition to providing long-term mutual aid to our community in NM, we will provide a blueprint for folks to learn how to show up as guest land stewards on stolen lands, and provide an avenue of needed food resources to our neighbors. Not only will folks feel inspired, educated, and reflective on what we grow, but how we've grown it. Our goal is growing food and plant medicine with one another, but we are also cultivating and growing a relationship between ourselves, and the spaces we inhabit.
