Jambo Palliative Care Supporters!

Spring has sprung and I hope everyone is doing well. I spent the month of April in Eldoret, Kenya and helped Dr. Hussein Elias with year-end exam for our Clinical Officer students. The trainees did well as they hone their clinical skills. Always good to see the progress. They are now just 6 months away from receiving their Higher Diploma in Palliative Care!

There was a bit of a bump this trip. There was a nationwide doctors strike for those employed in the public hospitals. It is a very complicated situation, and I was glad to hear the doctors are now back at work. Despite the strike, classes were still held in the medical school and I was able to contribute a few lectures for the senior medical students. To help with this, and other educational activities, I was joined by Dr. Tiffany Chen, a fellow in Hospice and Palliative Medicine at the Brown University School of Medicine. She is a very talented physician and showed remarkable clinical and teaching skills. Moreover, she was a delight to work with. Thanks Tiffany!

On the research front, our study of providing palliative care services to those living in rural Kenya was published in BMC Palliative Care. The paper, “Impact of training on knowledge, confidence and attitude amongst community health volunteers in the provision of community-based palliative care in rural Kenya” is a credit to the vision and hard work of Dr. Elias. It is an open access article (free) and I invite you to learn more about the type of work you have been supporting. The paper can be accessed at the link attached to this report.

While we are excited about the paper, our work is far from done and we have several irons in the fire. We’ll update you on our other activities in the next report. Until then, please be well and accept our sincerest thanks. Your support is making a difference!!!

Take care,

Ken
