Gearing up for Graduation

By Kenneth Cornetta | Project Leader

Hi Everyone!

I'm happy to report our Clinical Officer students are wrapping up their 18-month Higher Diploma Training in October. Soon they will be recognized by the regulatory board as specialists in Palliative Care!!! The program that you support remains the only such program in Kenya and is an important step in expanding palliative care access in Kenya.

Dr. Hussein Elias, the Kenyan physician who is leading the effort on the ground, continues our work in bringing palliative care services to Kenya's living in remote areas. He and our research nurse, Sarah, are now completing a survey of community health volunteers (CHV) who provide service in remote areas with a high incidence of sickle cell disease.  Sickle cell patients have some of the highest palliative care needs. The CHVs underwent training on sickle cell care one year ago, and our study will evaluate how training impacted their practice and identify challenges to care delivery.

Your donations have also been used to support a monthly palliative care Project ECHO session. These sessions consist of a one-hour virtual meeting that includes a didactic lecture and a case presentation by a clinician seeking help in patient management. We are reviewing the data from the first three years of this project - and I hope to have more info for you in our next quarterly report. Spoiler alert – the results are exciting!

As always, we all THANK YOU for your support. It is making a difference and helping people live the best life possible in tough situations.

Ken
