Two major earthquakes struck north-central Venezuela. The twin earthquakes were felt across much of the country, prompting evacuations, search-and-rescue operations and a nationwide State of Emergency. Americares began mobilizing assistance within hours of the disaster and has currently engaged its partner network within the country, as well as regional and global response agencies. Our response focuses on rapid delivery of medical aid and partner-led implementation to support health needs.
Preliminary reports from the devastating disaster indicate hundreds of deaths, thousands of injuries, and over 200,000 people in need of humanitarian assistance-with figures expected to rise as assessments continue. The area of the quake is urban and densely populated. There is significant infrastructure damage, including dozens of hospitals and health facilities, as well as disruption to power, water, telecommunications and transport networks.
Working with trusted local partners, Americares is prepared to deliver medicines, supplies and WASH support safely and effectively. Our response will focus on sustaining essential services, strengthening local providers, disease prevention and mental health support. We are in close coordination with PAHO, OCHA, local authorities and other NGOs to align our efforts and deliver a flexible response, backed by strong logistics and monitoring, focused on reducing gaps and adapting to evolving needs.
Americares response is estimated to benefit tens of thousands by delivering emergency medical aid for earthquake injuries, reinforcing damaged hospitals, and boosting local response capacity. Our plans include psychosocial support for trauma, WASH supplies to reduce disease risk, and coordinated action with other responders and governing agencies to address urgent gaps and reach affected communities efficiently. Our response is scalable and adaptable to meet needs as the situation evolves.
