Summary

After devastating earthquakes struck Venezuela, Americares is coordinating with local partners to deliver essential medicines, expand mobile health services and address growing needs related to mental health, safe water and access to care in underserved communities. Americares is also supporting a 35-member emergency medical team in Caracas to provide primary care and fill gaps left by damaged health facilities. We continue to assess urgent health needs while preparing for long-term recovery.

Challenge

The earthquakes caused catastrophic damage. Thousands were reported dead, over 10,000 injured and left nearly 18,000 homeless. Hospitals are overwhelmed, with damaged health facilities requiring urgent support. Survivors need treatment for injuries, replacement medications and access to basic health services. Critical needs also include restoring damaged facilities, providing clean water and expanding mental health and psychosocial support for communities and frontline responders.

Solution

Americares has launched an emergency response through local and regional partners. An Americares-supported medical team can treat up to 150 patients daily, providing care for earthquake injuries, medication refills, lab testing, dental services and mental health support. A water purification system has also been deployed. Additional funding supports local partners distributing medicines and relief supplies.

Long-Term Impact

Americares long-term recovery efforts aim to help rebuild a stronger, more resilient health system in Venezuela. Potential next-phase activities include rehabilitating damaged clinics and hospitals, training health workers in disaster response, trauma care and mental health, and supporting displaced families as they transition from relief to recovery. By strengthening local health capacity, expanding access to care and reducing future public health risks, Americares can help communities recover
