The music program at the CONAPAC library began on May 4th, and has taken place every Thursday and Friday to the current date, June 8th. Twenty youth at the library are participating actively using recorders, and more students at a nearby school are also benefitting from the teacher's visits.
With the $2500 raised, we have been able to afford the transportation, salary of the wonderful teacher, and the cost of printing music. We continue to seek additional money to fund the entire music program. Grants are being sought.
Jose Antonio Estrems, with over 30 years experience as a professional classical musician, is a motivated teacher who seeks out opportunity for developing musical talent wherever he goes. The music program at the library occurs in the afternoon, leaving the morning without activity. Jose has filled that time by going to a school near to the library along the tributary off the Amazon River, and has begun teaching the students to build a chorus. His lesson plans have included reading music, matching proper tones to notes, and how to sing together. The director and arts teacher are both appreciative of his visits, and adapt their schedule to his availability.
Similarly, in the library, Jose is teaching 20 children to read music, and is already working with them to play songs together. The instrument he is using with the kids are plastic flutes which were already at the library.
Jose has told us that there are 10 students at the library who he considers highly skilled.
Moving forward, we plan to continue bringing Jose to the library every Thursday and Friday for another four months. This program is unique and important. The nearby teachers, school directors, and parents know how special it is to have a skilled music teacher work with their kids given their rural location. Parents have even gone out of their way to ensure express their appreciation for the program and interest in its continuation. Nobody with such music experience has ever taught there before. For the kids that develop their skill, Jose wants to help them have a long music career.
