Challenge

In kanyawegi village, there is low involvement of girls and women in agriculture due to poor land ownership practices, leading to many women engaging in transactional sex for fish to survive. Unlike boys who go to play in the fields after school, girls lack play grounds and are always overburdened with household chores. This project will connect 200 girls to ecology themed gardening activities to demonstrate small scale sustainable farming practices that can ensure food security

Solution

This project establishes a shade garden and basketball court where girls can play and learn small scale sustainable farming practices based on permaculture that can ensure food security and community resilience everyday after school. The program also links adolescent girls to reproductive health counseling, environmental stewardship, and critical literacy promotion services to improve their self esteem and learning outcomes.

Long-Term Impact

The garden will act as a safe space for 200 girls to access training on sustainable gardening skills based on permaculture and play basketball & gain invaluable life skills. By so doing, it will reduce idleness and associated risks including early sexual debut, pregnacies, sexually transmitted diseases including HIV/AIDS and carry knowledge gained into adulthood and improve their economic opportunities, agricultural productivity, reproductive health and care for the earth through conservation
