For over 24 years, Fundación Cambugán has championed the conservation of native ecosystems, their wildlife, and the vital resources they provide – clean air and water. This year, we have witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of human-caused fires. In Ecuador alone, over 5,000 fires ravaged more than 80,000 hectares of forest in 2024, obliterating countless lives. Quito itself suffered 285 fires, destroying over 1,700 hectares. Even the protective forest Cambugan was not spared, losing over 80 hectares to the flames.
Ecuadorian forests suffered a devastating loss in 2024, with 80,000 hectares consumed by fire. In 2024, a devastating 44,000 farm animals perished in fires across Ecuador. Achupallas, a vital food source for the endangered Andean bear, were tragically destroyed by fires surrounding the Cambugan Forest. Late 2024 saw more than 200 firefighters engaged in a fierce battle against forest fires in Quito. Over 2 million liters of water were utilized to combat the fires.
Now, as we leave behind this year of fire and death, Fundación Cambugán, with the support of our dedicated friends, embarks on a year of healing and rebirth. We begin this journey at home, collaborating with our neighbors and the communities surrounding our forests. Together, we will launch new initiatives focused on research, wildlife observation, and responsible community tourism. A significant area exceeding 4,300 hectares is thankfully protected by the Cambugan Forest. We will continue the Alpaca Reintroduction Program and conduct further research, such as investigating Bat Populations in the Cambugan Forest. These actions ensure a healthy environment for wildlife like Jatunyaku, an Andean bear native to the Cambugán Forest, joyfully roams free in its natural habitat.
