We keep evolving! The agroecological project adapts to normal changes in the environment and the national situation. A first major change in recent months has been to diversify the initiative to recover Andean camelids (alpacas), as an environmentally friendly species and a symbol of Andean culture. Thanks to an alliance with entrepreneurs from the northwest of Quito, we decided to share the care of the animals, to expand their living space and thus facilitate their reproduction. In exchange, our allies will use their wool, and will share the offspring. With this alliance, the goal of recovering the species now has new allies with whom we share their passion for these animals!
A second important change is that we have already developed the first transactions based on the alliance with local private companies, with generally very good results. To give more power to this type of links, we have decided to increase our commitment to value-adding mechanisms to harvested products, through dehydration processes. For this we have received a donation of basic dehydration equipment, and we also enabled a space to test natural dehydration (with the sun), in order to compare its performance and characteristics. We have developed some tests, and now we have negotiated an agreement with two universities in Quito, to count on their technical support in the medium term.
Thirdly, we are seeking new alliances to support the diversification of Granja San Isidro, as well as to ensure new capacity building opportunities for the Mushuk Tukuy Network, and for young people living in the area. Currently, thanks to the Provincial Government of Pichincha, a little agroecological store is in full test operation. We hope that, based on it, groups of young people can try various entrepreneurship options and develop cultural and community activities. And thus offer young people options so as not to permanently leave their homes, in search of job opportunities in the city.
Thank you for your permanent support in these initiatives!
