The COVID-19 outbreak, declared a global pandemic on 11 March 2020, has reached all corners of the globe. As of 14 June 2021, Vietnam has had 10,337 confirmed cases with 58 deaths. The pandemic has alarmingly threatened the food security and nutrition of the most disadvantaged groups across Vietnam. With your kind support, AFV is taking proactive steps to provide emergency food assistance to vulnerable population in Bac Ninh, Bac Giang and Ho Chi Minh city to help them fight against COVID-19.
Bac Ninh, Bac Giang and Ho Chi Minh City are among hardest hit provinces in the fourth wave of COVID-19 in Vietnam. Over 10 million of people are in social distancing in HCMC - the largest city in Vietnam since June 1st, 2021. In Bac Ninh and Bac Giang provinces, hundred thousand of factory workers are kept in centralized isolation and lock-down. With many basic operations suspended, the effects of food insecurity have been felt very strongly among thousands of vulnerable people.
Meals and food packages will be delivered to vulnerable groups most severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, especially people and households with reduced or zero income on account of home-quarantine, self-isolation, furlough or layoff. Responding to the immediate food needs of 6,300 vulnerable people in the target areas, AFV will deliver 30,000 meals in the form of food boxes which are critical to maintaining the nutritional status of the affected people.
The right to adequate food and food security is the most basic of human needs and rights. As COVID-19 is an ongoing situation, nearly everyone is affected, and it won't be over for many months. Our initiative addresses immediate relief to ensure that everyone is free from hunger. Meanwhile, long-term recovery will be required going forward. For these reasons, there is definitely a great opportunity for this program to scale beyond the proposed scope.
