Clara Luna provides a space for the children and youth to engage in educational and creative activities, something very uncommon in Ecuador and especially in small towns like Puerto Lopez. With our after school programs, children are given an opportunity to do arts and crafts, read books, play games, and work together on community iniatives. They are taught skills like leadership, communication, and critical thinking, something severely lacking in the traditional school system
The youth and children of Puerto Lopez severely lack opportunities for after school and recreational activities thus leading to an increased substance abuse, teen pregnancy, and health problems at a very young age.
Clara Luna provides activities in a creative and educational environment for the youth and kids in Puerto Lopez. At kids and youth club participants are able to think critically and engage in topics such as health, the environment, and reading. In our English classes, participants are given the opportunity to learn in an interactive way a new language that will benefit them immensely in the future. In our club for kids with disabilities, we provide a safe space for the participants to grow.
There are currently around 100 youth and children involved in the clubs and activities at Clara Luna, decreasing the number of youth in Puerto Lopez involved with drugs and alcohol, teen pregnancy, and health problems (malnutrition or overweight). With this project, we hope to expand the youth and children that attend our clubs to affect at least 200 youth in the community.
