For more than six decades, Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) has supported the conservation authorities and communities of the Serengeti, home to the world's most iconic wildlife migration. This work includes removing wire snares that trap and kill wildlife, employing ex-poachers, training communities in microfinance to create community conservation banks, and supporting rangers who protect the ecosystem's critically endangered black rhinos.
The world faces an unprecedented crisis of biodiversity loss and climate change. We are failing to meet global biodiversity targets, eroding the ecosystems our economies, food security, and quality of life depend on. The Serengeti, home to one of the last great wildlife migrations on Earth, faces mounting pressure from poaching and encroachment. The next decade is critical, and the window to secure a sustainable future for this landscape is closing fast.
With FZS's support, the government authorities and local communities that protect this landscape are equipped to maintain the on-the-ground presence that the Serengeti needs: snare removal teams comprised of ex-poachers that patrol daily to deter poachers and rescue trapped animals, ranger-led monitoring and protection of endangered black rhinos, and microfinance training that helps communities build sustainable livelihoods alongside wildlife. This work requires consistent, dependable financing.
Sustained investment allows the Serengeti to shift from crisis response to lasting stability, with its wildlife and migration corridors protected for the long term. By reducing poaching, protecting black rhinos, and helping local communities' benefit from their proximity to the park through employment, microfinance initiatives and sustainable livelihoods, wildlife populations are maintained, and the ecosystem's essential services are preserved for future generations.
