New Wheels, New Freedom: Elizabeth’s Trike Brings Independence
Fourteen-year-old Elizabeth lives with multiple conditions including Hypermobility, Hypotonia, Scoliosis, and Global developmental delay. Her mobility relies on a walking frame for daily activities and a wheelchair for trips away from home, but both require constant supervision and leave her dependent on others for movement. Elizabeth's current equipment significantly limits her freedom and autonomy. When using her walking frame, she tires easily and must frequently stop to find somewhere to sit and rest. Her wheelchair requires her to be pushed everywhere, creating a frustrating dependence on others that affects her confidence and sense of control over her own movement. Elizabeth loves spending time with her parents and being outdoors, but the lack of the right equipment causes considerable frustration as she's always reliant on others to determine where she goes and when she stops.
Elizabeth's family had witnessed the power of appropriate cycling equipment. A few years earlier, when she had a smaller trike, Elizabeth experienced real independence for the first time. She loved the opportunity to go at her own pace during rides with her dad in local parks, determining her own route and safely stopping whenever she wanted. Most importantly, when she learned to pedal and use the brakes independently, she was elated - as was her family at seeing her achievements. Unfortunately, Elizabeth outgrew the trike, and financial constraints prevented the family from replacing it with age-appropriate equipment. This meant returning to the frustrating restrictions that her other mobility aids created. The right trike could provide years of enjoyment and physical benefits while growing with her developmental needs. She wanted equipment that would restore her sense of control while supporting her love of outdoor adventures with her parents.
Thanks to our donors AFK's was able to provide a new trike for Elizabeth, carefully selected to be appropriate for her age and abilities while offering room for growth and development in her cycling skills.
Elizabeth's dad captured the precious moment of her return to independent cycling:
"Thank you for ordering Elizabeth's trike, which she loves. The photo is of her first go on it, and she was a little nervous but happy!! We are so very grateful for your help. The equipment has restored her ability to make her own choices about pace, direction, and rest stops, returning the control that had been missing from her life”.
For Elizabeth's family, watching her regain this independence has been deeply moving. They're excited about the adventures that lie ahead, knowing how great cycling had been for Elizabeth in the past.
