Thank you from AFK

We are very proud to have changed the lives of many children and young people with disabilities and autism for the better and we would like to thank you for your generous support. I am delighted to provide an update on our work during the first half of the year.

Mobility Equipment Service

In the first half or our financial year we have supported 99 disabled children and young people around the UK with the provision and maintenance of specialist mobility equipment and we are currently experiencing an unprecedented number of applications.

Lucy’s Story

Lucy is a three-year-old girl from Paisley, where she lives with her parents and big sister Millie. She was born prematurely at 24 weeks and was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Despite the many challenges that she faces and the numerous surgeries that she has undergone, Lucy is a happy little girl who loves to join in with family activities.

She is not able to walk unaided and is currently only able to get around the house by ‘cruising’ the furniture. For outings, her family are restricted to going everywhere by car, which they find isolating, and using the pram for Lucy. She can get very frustrated about her poor mobility and doesn't enjoy being in the pram.

Lucy’s family wanted her to be able to join in family activities such as going to the park or out for walks with her older sister. They were very keen for her to be able to meet and socialise with other children her age. They applied to AFK for funding to buy an accessible trike for Lucy to give her the same opportunities as other children.

Lucy’s trike has now arrived (in her favourite colour pink) and she loves it!

Her Mum told us that it has already make a huge difference to family life; they have been able to make some summer evening trips to the park, and it has been wonderful to see Lucy’s happiness at being able to take part on her new trike.

Her big sister Millie told us: “Lucy’s new trike is really important to me because it means we can go out on our bikes together. It’s very fun to go down to the park and we can play on the swings together. Thank you.”
