An update on your donation to the Afghanistan Emergency Fund

Thank you for your generous donation to the Afghanistan Emergency Fund. Your donation to this GlobalGiving fund is making a difference by helping to ensure that Afghans have access to nutritious food, especially during the coldest winter months. It is giving women and girls education and livelihood opportunities, and providing Afghan refugees with critical support after they flee their homeland.

Since September, donations from the fund have supported nine grants to high-impact nonprofit organizations using their knowledge and community networks to meet the critical needs of Afghans, including those who are internally displaced and those seeking asylum. This is vital as Afghan families struggle through the coldest winter in more than 10 years and grapple with the de facto government’s recent bans on women and girls' education and on female aid workers.

Here is a short description of some of the critical work you’ve supported:

AAFF is running computer courses for girls in two schools in Afghanistan, while simultaneously providing food distributions to more than 100 families that are food insecure in parts of northern Afghanistan. The nonprofit is also partnering with communities to build wells so they can access safe drinking water year round.

Barakat Inc. is offering scholarships and educational opportunities for Afghan girls now displaced to Pakistan, as well as evening classes for women and girls. The organization is also providing salaries to some Afghan female teachers who are allowed to continue working in schools in Afghanistan.

Aid Afghanistan for Education is growing its online education classes by distributing tablets and using applications to support at-home learning for girls. The organization also supported 100 families with blankets and cash assistance for heating material in response to a difficult winter. Since Ramadan began in mid-March, the organization has been supplying food to 1,000 people daily.

Internews is supporting journalists whose livelihoods have been affected, conducting digital safety trainings, and helping local agencies provide relevant news, in local languages, to communities that otherwise might not have access to critical information.

Association for Solidarity with Asylum Seekers and Migrants (ASAM) is working with Afghan refugees in Turkiye by offering them counseling, legal aid, and in-kind assistance to support those staying in Turkiye and those continuing their journeys to seek safety in other countries.

An update on your donation to the Afghanistan Emergency Fund

Since our last update, Afghanistan has faced several disasters, with an ongoing economic crisis, an earthquake in June that killed nearly 1,000 people in the southeastern part of the country, and a flood in neighboring Pakistan deepening the struggles of Afghan refugees there. Amid these crises, your donation to the GlobalGiving Afghanistan Emergency Fund is making a difference in supporting changemakers addressing the challenges of Afghans locally and globally.

This quarter, grants from the Afghanistan Emergency Fund have supported 10 high-impact and community-led nonprofit organizations helping Afghans.

Here is a short description of some of the critical work you’ve supported:

Carry the Future and Tahirih Justice Center are supporting Afghans arriving in the US as they integrate into their new home and also maintain their connection to their families in Afghanistan.
Relief International is providing Afghan refugees living in Pakistan with emergency relief to recover from the recent floods there and supporting education programs to prevent gaps in early childhood learning.
Japan Emergency NGO (JEN) and Afghanistan-Pakistan Women’s Economic Empowerment are delivering food packages and helping communities prepare for the difficult winter season ahead.

An update on your donation to the Afghanistan Emergency Fund

It’s hard to believe how much the world has endured since our last update to you. Your support of the Afghanistan Emergency Fund is making a difference and ensuring that communities in need are not forgotten as time passes.

This spring, donations from the fund supported three grants to high-impact nonprofit organizations using their skills and missions to meet the varied needs of internally displaced Afghan children and families.

Here is a short description of some of the critical work you’ve supported:

Bamyan Foundation is working to protect and support the Hazara community, a minority ethnic group that has faced increased attacks since the Taliban’s takeover in August 2022. The organization is providing first aid to survivors of recent targeted bombings on a local school and mosque. It is also collecting funds for survivors, coordinating with hospitals treating survivors, and contributing to funeral costs for families who lost loved ones in the attacks.

Mobile Mini Circus for Children is organizing collective games and uplifting activities along with providing food for children. This gives communities vital psychosocial support and regular access to nutritious meals.

Action for Development is leading feeding programs, health and midwifery trainings, and disaster response efforts following the recent flooding in northern Afghanistan. With operations across the country, the organization is making a big impact through its community-led approach in challenging environments.
